Lesson 1: Introduction to module

Two concepts need to be established: the structure of an ad and the idea of New Zealand in the ads.

Learning intentions

Introduce concept of the way New Zealand may be represented in ads.

  • What to expect in an ad.
  • Identify jargon words in ads.

Success criteria

I can:

  • brainstorm and predict, with the help of my peers I am able to predict what to expect in the ads
  • match the right jargon word with definition and place it along side the concept from the brainstorm.

Activity

Start with structure of the ad – students to brainstorm, on the board with the teacher, what you expect to see in an ad.

Students are looking for ideas such as product, logo, slogan, jingle, music, and so on.

Students should be able to identify by describing, for example, “a shot of what you are selling”; “song to go with the ad”, and so on.

Teacher explains new ad jargon and what the words are for the ideas.

Jargon Vocabulary

Jingle: song attached to the product ad is selling.

Logo: image/symbol for the product, for example, big M for McDonald's.

Product: what the ad is selling – life insurance, burgers, shoes etc.

Target audience: who the ad is aimed at.

Slogan: line that is attached to the product, for example, “…where everyone gets a bargain”.

Activity

Introduce the idea of a New Zealand ad.

Working in groups, students are given an A3 piece of paper and are to write down and draw images of everything they would expect to see in a New Zealand ad.

After they have finished each group presents their thoughts to the class.

Record ideas on the whiteboard.

Engage students in a class discussion.

Put each group's completed A3 sheet on wall.

At the end of the module, compare predictions and expectations with what was found in ads studied.
